The usual gateway is a 45-minute biomechanical assessment with PHITS pressure-plate analysis (£90), which may be with Emmanuel Acheampong (HCPC CH33952) or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. Orthotics are one part of a plan, not a cure on their own. After assessment, Emmanuel discusses and — where appropriate — prescribes orthotics in his specialist clinics (Tuesday and Friday). Routine podiatry for nails, corns and hard skin remains available Monday to Saturday with the wider team. What are orthotics?
Orthotics (also called orthoses) are medical insoles prescribed to influence how load moves through the feet and lower limbs. They can be shaped for different shoes where the footwear allows — trainers, many work shoes, and some specialist sports footwear — but the right device still depends on your feet, your shoes and your goals.
At Westway, orthotics are usually one part of a wider plan, not a cure on their own. After assessment, Emmanuel may recommend footwear changes, activity modification, stretching or strengthening, a prefabricated or custom device — or, where suitable after assessment, discussion of other options on the MSK pathway. Response varies from person to person; we do not guarantee outcomes.
We do not currently offer Archform 3D-printed orthotics — that printer has not been purchased. Do not book expecting Archform branding or in-house 3D printing.
What happens: assessment → prescribe → fit
- Book the gateway assessment. The 45-minute biomechanical assessment includes PHITS pressure-plate analysis (£90) and may be with Emmanuel or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. You do not need a GP referral privately.
- History and examination. What hurts, sport or work demands, footwear, previous injuries, and how your joints and soft tissues move.
- Gait and PHITS. Walking (and sometimes standing or simple tasks) with pressure-plate data to support clinical findings.
- Plan in plain English. Whether orthotics are likely to help as part of your plan — and if so, which rung of the ladder fits — or whether footwear and rehab advice come first. Fees are explained before you proceed.
- Prescribe and capture. Where a device is appropriate, Emmanuel agrees the type with you. Capture for custom work uses the casting or scanning method used in clinic at the time.
- Fit and review. When the device is ready, you return for fitting advice and, where needed, a biomechanical review (£49). Refurbishment of existing Westway orthotics is £135 when that is the right next step.

Who assesses you — and who prescribes your orthotics?
The gateway biomechanical assessment with PHITS may be with Emmanuel Acheampong or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. Soft clinic language applies: “our HCPC-registered podiatrists” / “your assessing podiatrist”.
On this MSK pathway, custom and prefabricated orthotics prescribing often remains with Emmanuel in his specialist clinics (Tuesdays and Fridays). Emmanuel is an HCPC-registered podiatrist (CH33952), with a BSc (Hons) in Podiatric Medicine and an MSc in Podiatric Surgery. His MSc dissertation focused on hallux rigidus (big-toe arthritis) and treatment options, including surgical options. He spent around five years as a specialist podiatrist at Suffolk Foot Surgery Centre, Ipswich, gaining experience in triage, arthritis assessment, X-ray review, scrubbing in, advising on surgical options and administering steroid injections.
Routine podiatry (nails, corns, hard skin and similar) remains available Monday to Saturday with the wider team — that is a separate service from specialist MSK clinics and does not include orthotics prescribing on this pathway.

PHITS bespoke (£320) is used when a PHITS-linked bespoke device suits your plan after the same gateway assessment. Simple bespoke (£125) and EVA (£250) sit between those options when appropriate. Do you offer 3D-printed or Archform orthotics?
Not at present. Do not book expecting Archform or in-house 3D printing.
How long do custom orthotics take?
Turnaround depends on the device type and lab schedule. We confirm timing when you proceed — we do not publish a fixed number of days on this page until clinic confirms.
Are orthotics a cure?
No. They are usually one part of a plan with footwear advice, activity changes and rehab where needed. Results vary; we do not guarantee pain relief or return to sport.
Can orthotics go in any shoe?
They can be designed with different shoes in mind where the shoe allows (trainers, many work shoes, some specialist footwear). Very flat or fashion-only shoes may not accept a full device — Emmanuel helps you choose.
