Biomechanical Assessment & Foot Pain in Redhill
Heel, arch, ankle or big-toe pain that keeps returning often needs more than a quick look at the sore spot. At The Westway Clinic, 17 Hatchlands Road, Redhill, our HCPC-registered podiatrists assess how your feet, ankles and legs move — and how that movement may be loading the tissue that hurts. A 45-minute biomechanical assessment includes PHITS pressure-plate analysis and is the usual gateway to a clear plan. That plan may include footwear advice, a stretching or strengthening programme, custom orthotics, or — after assessment — discussion of a joint injection. Foot and ankle assessments may be with Emmanuel Acheampong (HCPC CH33952) or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. Orthotics prescribing and injections on this pathway often remain with Emmanuel in his specialist clinics (Tuesday and Friday). Routine podiatry for nails, corns and hard skin remains available Monday to Saturday with the wider team. Patients visit us from Redhill, Reigate, Merstham, Earlswood, Nutfield, Horley and the surrounding Surrey area.

Why book MSK and biomechanical care here?
- Gateway assessment with PHITS — 45 minutes with your assessing podiatrist looking at how you stand and walk, with pressure-plate data to support clinical findings (£90; review £49). Assessments with Emmanuel or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist
- Custom orthotics as a core path — bespoke polypropylene or carbon fibre from £300; PHITS bespoke £320; EVA £250; simpler options from £65 — prescribed by Emmanuel when they fit your plan after assessment
- Hallux rigidus expertise — Emmanuel’s MSc dissertation focused on big-toe arthritis and treatment options (including surgical options), so stiff or painful big toes are assessed with that depth of knowledge
- Surgical pathway experience — around five years as a specialist podiatrist at Suffolk Foot Surgery Centre (Ipswich), including triage, arthritis assessment, X-ray review, scrubbing in, advising on surgical options and giving steroid injections
- Clear, soft injection option — cortisone joint injections £200, administered by Emmanuel following assessment when suitable; no pressure to proceed
- No GP referral needed privately; assessments with our HCPC-registered podiatrists; orthotics prescribing and injections often with Emmanuel on specialist clinics Tue & Fri; routine podiatry Mon–Sat (separate service)
What is a biomechanical assessment?
A biomechanical assessment looks at how the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons of your lower limbs work together when you stand, walk and (where relevant) run or play sport. The aim is to understand why a structure is under strain — not only where it hurts — so we can discuss options that fit you.
At Westway the assessment lasts about 45 minutes and includes PHITS pressure-plate analysis. It may be with Emmanuel Acheampong or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. PHITS captures how pressure is distributed under your feet; your assessing podiatrist uses that alongside hands-on examination and your history. It does not mean we claim 3D-printed Archform devices — we do not offer Archform printing at present.
You do not need a GP referral to book privately.
Your assessment, step by step
- History. What hurts, when it started, sport or work demands, footwear, previous injuries, and medicines or conditions that affect your feet.
- Examination. Looking at posture, joint range, muscle strength and soft tissues from the hips to the toes, as relevant to your presentation.
- Gait and PHITS. Walking (and sometimes standing or simple tasks) with pressure-plate analysis to see loading patterns.
- Findings in plain English. What is likely contributing to your symptoms, and what is less likely — without over-claiming certainty.
- Plan. Your assessing podiatrist discusses options that may include footwear changes, activity modification, stretching and strengthening, custom or prefabricated orthotics, referral to physiotherapy or osteopathy in clinic where helpful, discussion of a joint injection, or advice on when a surgical opinion is worth exploring. You decide the next step with clear fees before anything further is booked.

Stretching and strengthening programmes are often part of the plan — see stretching & strengthening.
Treatment paths we may discuss
1. Advice, footwear and rehab
Many presentations improve with the right shoes, activity changes and a structured stretching or strengthening plan. Your assessing podiatrist explains what to try first and what to avoid. Soft language only — response varies from person to person.
2. Custom orthotics (core path)
Orthotics (orthoses) are medical insoles prescribed for a reason. They are usually one part of a wider plan, not a standalone cure. After your biomechanical assessment, Emmanuel discusses and — where appropriate — prescribes whether a prefabricated device, a simple bespoke insole, EVA, PHITS bespoke or a polypropylene/carbon fibre custom device suits your feet, shoes and goals. Orthotics prescribing on this MSK pathway remains with Emmanuel (specialist clinics Tue & Fri).
We do not currently offer Archform 3D-printed orthotics — that printer has not been purchased. Do not expect Archform branding or 3D-print claims on this page or in clinic marketing until confirmed otherwise.
| Orthotic option | Price |
|---|---|
| Prefabricated orthotics | £65 |
| Simple bespoke insoles | £125 |
| EVA orthotics | £250 |
| Custom orthotics (bespoke polypropylene / carbon fibre) | from £300 |
| PHITS bespoke orthotics | £320 |
| Orthotic refurbishment | £135 |
Orthotics can be designed with different shoes in mind (trainers, work shoes, and some specialist footwear where the shoe allows). Emmanuel helps you choose. See also our orthotics page (scheduled for a full upgrade next).
3. Joint injections (cortisone)
Where assessment suggests a suitable joint or soft-tissue presentation, Emmanuel may discuss a corticosteroid (cortisone) injection and administer it when appropriate. Fee: £200. Suitability is decided after assessment — this is not an automatic add-on, and we do not guarantee duration of benefit. Injections on this pathway remain with Emmanuel (specialist clinics Tue & Fri).
Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections for suitable big-toe arthritis may be discussed at assessment where appropriate — same soft approach as the steroid path. We do not list a standalone HA price and do not present HA as a firm advertised product with a fee.
4. When surgery is discussed
For bunions, advanced hallux rigidus, progressive PTTD or arthritis that has not settled with conservative care, Emmanuel can discuss surgical options in general terms and help you understand when a surgical opinion or referral is reasonable. He is an HCPC-registered podiatrist with an MSc in Podiatric Surgery — describe him that way; do not call him a podiatric surgeon. Nail surgery (ingrown nails) is a separate service on ingrown toenails & nail surgery.

Who delivers MSK assessments, orthotics and injections?
Biomechanical assessments (including PHITS) for foot and ankle issues may be with Emmanuel Acheampong or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. Soft clinic language applies: “our HCPC-registered podiatrists” / “your assessing podiatrist”.
Custom and prefabricated orthotics prescribing and injections (cortisone; hyaluronic acid discuss-only where suitable) on this pathway often remain with Emmanuel in his specialist clinics (Tuesdays and Fridays).
Emmanuel is an HCPC-registered podiatrist (CH33952), with a BSc (Hons) in Podiatric Medicine and an MSc in Podiatric Surgery. His MSc dissertation was on hallux rigidus — the stiff, arthritic big toe — covering conditions and treatment options including surgical options. He spent around five years as a specialist podiatrist at Suffolk Foot Surgery Centre, 1 Walker Close, Ipswich, Suffolk IP3 8LY, gaining experience in triage, arthritis assessment, X-ray review, scrubbing in, advising on surgical options and administering steroid injections. Routine podiatry (nails, corns, hard skin and similar) remains available Monday to Saturday with the wider team — that is a separate service from specialist MSK clinics.
You can check his registration on the HCPC register at hcpc-uk.org.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If you have private health insurance, check your policy and any authorisation needed before assessment, orthotics or injections.
Which appointment should I book for pain or a sports injury?
Book a biomechanical assessment (£90, 45 minutes, includes PHITS) with Emmanuel or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist for foot and ankle issues. Reception can help if you are unsure — call 01737 762990.
Who does the biomechanical assessment — can any Westway podiatrist do this?
Yes. Foot and ankle biomechanical assessments may be with Emmanuel Acheampong or another Westway HCPC-registered podiatrist. Orthotics prescribing and injections on this pathway often remain with Emmanuel in his specialist clinics (Tuesday and Friday). Routine Monday–Saturday nail/corn podiatry is a separate service. Book a biomechanical assessment online or call reception on 01737 762990.
What is PHITS?
PHITS is a pressure-plate system used during your assessment to show how load is distributed under your feet. It supports the clinical examination. It is not the same as claiming Archform 3D-printed orthotics.
Will I definitely get orthotics?
No. Orthotics are prescribed when they are a sensible part of your plan after assessment — often by Emmanuel. Some people need footwear and rehab advice only; others benefit from prefabricated or custom devices.
How much do custom orthotics cost?
Bespoke polypropylene or carbon fibre devices are from £300. PHITS bespoke £320; EVA £250; simple bespoke £125; prefabricated £65; refurbishment £135. Fees are confirmed before you proceed.
Do you offer 3D-printed or Archform orthotics?
Not at present. Do not book expecting Archform or in-house 3D printing.
What does a joint injection cost?
A cortisone joint injection is £200, only after assessment if suitable, and administered by Emmanuel. Benefit and suitability vary; we do not guarantee results.
Do you offer hyaluronic acid injections for big-toe arthritis?
Where suitable for hallux rigidus / big-toe arthritis, hyaluronic acid may be discussed at assessment. We do not list a separate HA price on this page; he will explain options and any fees before you decide.
Can you help with hallux rigidus (big-toe arthritis)?
Yes — this is an area of particular interest for Emmanuel (MSc dissertation on hallux rigidus and treatment options, including surgical options). He assesses the joint, discusses conservative options (footwear, orthotics, injection if suitable), and advises when a surgical opinion may be appropriate.
Is Emmanuel a podiatric surgeon?
No. He is an HCPC-registered podiatrist with an MSc in Podiatric Surgery. He advises on surgical options and referral pathways; nail surgery he performs at Westway is described on the ingrown toenails page.
